Nominated by: Dean Jones
I would like to nominate the University of Buckingham Mace as one of Buckinghamshire’s most significant objects. The Ceremonial Mace derives from a weapon used as a symbol of authority. The earliest examples date back to the 15th Century. The University of Buckingham mace is a highly ornamented staff used as a symbol of the university’s authority to award degrees.
I feel very privileged to hold the ceremonial title of University of Buckingham Mace Bearer. Most recently I had the great privilege of leading Dame Mary Archer as newly ‘Installed’ Chancellor of the University of Buckingham. My main responsibility is to lead the Vice-Chancellor’s party into each Graduation Ceremony. Over the last four years I have had the great honour of leading Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice-Chancellor since 2015. I have also had the unique experience of being in the room amongst guests of honour and honorary graduands before each ceremony. Over the years we have awarded honorary degrees to many internationally recognised figures. In the last four years alone we have awarded honorary degrees to Baroness Manningham Buller, former head of MI5, Lord Mervyn King of Lothbury (former Head of the Bank of England) and His Excellency Dr Bawumia, an alumnus of Buckingham and current Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana. We have also awarded an honorary doctorate to Buckinghamshire’s very own Pete Winkelman, owner of Stadium MK for his outstanding contribution.
It is a great honour to fulfil such a significant role and to witness thousands of University of Buckingham students graduating each year. We are very fortunate in Buckinghamshire to have great universities which contribute so much to the health and prosperity of the county and beyond. The University of Buckingham Mace is a symbol of our contribution and the success of those students who achieve so much while they study with us in our Historic Market Town of Buckingham.
The University of Buckingham Mace was nominated by Dean Jones, Partnerships and Outreach Manager and Mace Bearer at the University of Buckingham.
